Computer-Aided Detection of Malignancy with Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Breast
DESCRIPTION
Computer-aided detection (CAD) is proposed as a supplement to a radiologist’s interpretation of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast. CAD is intended to improve the specificity of MRI in detecting or measuring malignant tissue.
POLICY
Computer-aided detection for interpretation of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the breast is considered investigational.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Studies, regarding the use of computer-aided detection with MRI of the breast, published in peer review journals based on evidence based medicine are lacking. Prospective, well-designed studies regarding the addition of CAD with MRI for the specific uses of interest are needed to determine whether or not the use of CAD provides a positive clinical benefit.
Computer-aided detection for interpretation of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the breast does not meet the following technology evaluation criteria:
The scientific evidence must permit conclusions concerning the effect of the technology on health outcomes.
The technology must improve the net health outcome.
The technology must be as beneficial as any established alternatives.
The improvement must be attainable outside the investigational settings.
