CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has earned nationally recognized accreditations from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry. The accreditations are for the company’s health utilization management (UM) and health provider credentialing operations.

First received in 1993 by BlueCross, the renewed UM accreditation from URAC provides assurance of the appropriateness of proposed medical care and that the practices of BlueCross are fair and equitable for all parties. BlueCross’ provider credentialing accreditation, which was first earned in 1995, ensures that doctors and others participating in health care networks have the appropriate credentials, qualifications and licensure.

“By receiving accreditation under URAC standards, BlueCross is able to demonstrate a dedication to outstanding service and products,” said Dr. Ken Patric, chief medical officer for BlueCross. “Our members, employer accounts, providers and regulators can have peace of mind that we’re working to provide them quality care.”

“We applaud BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee on achieving URAC utilization management and provider credentialing accreditations,” said Charles Stellar, URAC board chair. “In today’s health care market, URAC accreditation provides a mark of distinction for organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality health care.”

In addition to UM and provider credentialing recognitions, BlueCross currently holds URAC accreditations for its case management program, health Web site, and HIPAA Privacy and Security measures.
