CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Consumers seeking health information online can continue to turn to BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s Web site,, which recently earned another term of accreditation from URAC’s Health Web Site Accreditation Program.

URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization, first established its Health Web Site Accreditation Program in 2001 to promote quality and accountability in online health information and services. Today nearly 300 Web sites across the country are URAC-accredited.

“With the growing interest in consumer-directed health care, it’s more important than ever to provide a Web site that delivers easily understood and valuable health content and services to all our stakeholders,” said Trevin Bernarding, manager of e-business development for BlueCross. “This reaccreditation confirms our efforts to deliver fellow Tennesseans the most reliable online health resources possible.”

The URAC Health Web Site Accreditation standards cover 50 important requirements, including health content editorial processes, linking policies to other Web sites, privacy and security, mechanisms for consumer complaints, disclosure of financial relationships, and emergence of best practices. The standards also contain requirements to assure consumers that organizations have adequate internal processes and structure to monitor and maintain Web site quality over time.

“BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee should be commended for meeting strict quality standards,” said Charles Stellar, URAC board chair. “It is critically important for health care organizations to make a commitment to quality and accountability. URAC accreditation is a demonstration of that commitment.”

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting health care quality through accreditation and certification programs. URAC’s standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the health care system and provide a mark of distinction for health care organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability.
