CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — On Friday, Sept. 8, Melanie Bloom, the wife of deceased NBC News correspondent David Bloom, will address more than 200 area health care professionals about the threat of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). David Bloom died as a result of complications related to DVT while covering the war in Iraq. The workshop begins at 11:30 a.m. in the 801 Pine Street location of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

Ms. Bloom serves as the spokesperson for the National Coalition to Prevent DVT. Since her husband’s death in 2003, Melanie has worked with the organization to help educate Americans about DVT, a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the large veins. The condition may result in a pulmonary embolism (PE) or even death if not properly diagnosed and treated.

DVT causes 600,000 annual hospitalizations and as many as 200,000 deaths—more deaths than the number caused by breast cancer, AIDs and highway fatalities. Yet nearly three-fourths of individuals have little to no awareness of DVT.
