CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) has named S. Brad Traverse director of federal and regulatory affairs. Traverse will be located in Washington, D.C., where he will represent the Chattanooga-based company on legislative and regulatory matters.

Most recently, Traverse operated his own government affairs consulting company. Prior to that, Traverse was executive director of the Acute Long Term Hospital Association and spent more than 14 years working in government relations for various organizations. Traverse began his career in Washington as a legislative aide to Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., and he served as legislative assistant to Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum, R-Kan.

In addition to serving 3 million Tennesseans, BCBST provides Medicare services in 47 states. BCBST is the Part A fiscal intermediary for Tenn. and N.J. and is the national intermediary for organ procurement organizations and histocompatibility labs. BCBST is also the largest payor of Medicare claims in freestanding rural health clinics in America.

Calvin Anderson, BCBST vice president of federal relations, said that adding Traverse to his team will help the organization better serve its national clients.

BCBST provides Medicare services to more than 2 million people nationwide, and the decisions that are made in Washington at both the legislative and regulatory levels affect that service. Brad will help us strengthen existing and build new relationships that ensure we can continue to provide stellar customer service to both our government and commercial customers.
