CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — In its effort to positively impact the health and quality of life of Tennesseans, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee made investments of more than $4.8 million during 2007. Through financial, in-kind and volunteer efforts BlueCross contributed to more than 250 organizations across the state.

According to BlueCross’ vice president of federal and community relations, Calvin Anderson, community outreach is more than just a focus for BlueCross.

“As a health care company, we are in a unique position to not only meet the current needs of our members, but to also address growing health concerns by investing in them at an early stage,” Anderson explained. “By making our outreach efforts a priority and focusing on preventive measures, we can effect a positive change for the next generation of Tennesseans.”

Major contribution outlets for the company include the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Community Trust and corporate outreach.

Funding priorities for the Foundation were children’s health, addressing the uninsured, health care workforce needs, and patient quality and safety. TheFoundation bestowed nearly $2.4 million in grants awarded to organizations such as the Tennessee Hospital Education & Research Foundation for funding of the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety as well as the Tennessee Center for Nursing to fund a graduate nursing loan forgiveness program.

Through the Trust more than $450,000 was donated to over 100 charitable organizations statewide supporting: healthy living, health care access, education and diversity, and economic and community development. Organizations receiving funds ranged from disease prevention associations and volunteer-based health clinics to youth-oriented groups.

As part of corporate outreach, BlueCross sponsored many events and health initiatives, including the Tennessee Senior Olympics, WalkingWorks for Schools, and Healthy Competition, an anti-performance enhancing drug campaign. Additionally, BlueCross employees showed their commitment to community outreach by volunteering more than 51,000 hours of personal time to enhance the lives of fellow Tennesseans throughout the state.
