CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — G. Henry Smith has been named senior vice president and chief-of-staff of the commercial operations unit at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

In his new role, Smith is responsible for strategic operations and service delivery for all commercial lines of business. He will oversee membership administration, BlueCard® and member benefits administration, underwriting and commercial financial services.

Smith joined BlueCross in 1995 as president of Advanced Insurance Services, the company’s third-party administrator. He then became regional sales director for Memphis in 1999. Prior to joining the company, Smith served in a variety of finance positions, including chief financial officer and treasurer for Freds, Inc.

“Henry’s strong financial background, tremendous industry knowledge, and years of experience in the field interacting with groups and brokers provide unique insight on the needs of our customers,” said Joan Harp, president of commercial business and established markets at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

Smith serves on numerous boards and organizations and is a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis and is a certified public accountant.
