CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has surpassed its goals for participation by Minority, Women Business Enterprises (MWBE) and local businesses in the completion of its corporate headquarters construction project.

With a 26 percent MWBE participation rate and a local, regional contractors rate of 63 percent, BlueCross achieved levels among the highest ever for a large-scale, private commerical construction project in the city of Chattanooga. The company’s original goals were 25 percent for MWBE and 50 percent for local contractors.

“BlueCross has always worked closely with minority-owned and small businesses to ensure that our suppliers reflect our company’s overall diversity goals,” said Dan Jacobson, vice president of properties for BlueCross. “As we set out to construct our new headquarters on Cameron Hill, we not only aimed to continue those diversity efforts, but we set a high bar for ourselves.”

According to Bob Worthington, senior vice president and chief strategy officer for BlueCross, the diversity goals were self-directed, not part of any government requirements.

“We set our goals high, not because we were required to do so, but because it was the right thing to do,” Worthington added.

As an additional aspect of BlueCross’ vendor diversity targets, the company set and achieved its participation levels without any increased costs or compromising other project goals.
