CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee announces that Bill Steverson has joined the company as director of communications.

In this new position, Steverson will be accountable for internal and external communications, affecting 4,300 employees and 4.3 million BlueCross members. His primary responsibilities will include strategic planning and media relations.

“Bill’s array of communications expertise will be an asset to our team,” said Ron Harr, senior vice president for BlueCross. “His skills will help direct the numerous and varied work of the communications division, especially our ongoing work to educate health care consumers about what drives health care costs and to communicate our company’s efforts to provide affordable health care coverage.”

As communications director, Steverson will report to Harr and oversee a staff of 20 employees.

Steverson has worked more than 30 years in the communications field. He has extensive experience in public relations, marketing, crisis management, government relations and journalism.

Prior to joining BlueCross he served as director of public affairs for the McCallie School where he developed and implemented a communications program that helped position McCallie as one of the top college preparatory schools in the South. Steverson also has held various management positions with the Tennessee Valley Authority, and worked as a reporter and editor for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis and The Birmingham Post-Herald.

Steverson holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Samford University and a master’s in communications from the University of Tennessee.

He has served on many boards, including the allocations committee for the United Way of Greater Chattanooga. Steverson attends St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church where he is a member of the vestry. Steverson and his wife, Bess, have two sons.
