CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — On May 1, the 42,000 seniors enrolled in BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Medicare Advantage plans will have access to free around-the-clock health coaching services.

These Medicare Advantage enrollees, known as BlueAdvantage members, will have 24/7 access to highly experienced registered nurses who will telephonically help them with a wide variety of health care issues. The phone-based assistance ranges from understanding symptoms and assessing urgent care needs, to preparing for physician visits and learning about self care.

“Health plan members of any age can benefit from the expertise, convenience and constant connectivity to a clinician,” said Robert Slattery, vice president and general manager of the senior care division at BlueCross. “Our seniors are looking for ways to be more engaged in their health care, stay healthier and reduce their share of health care costs. Health coaching is an ideal way to help deliver on all these goals.”

According to newly released survey research, health coaching is flourishing nationwide. It’s a concept that is quickly becoming more accepted in mainstream medicine and one that is being taken advantage of by health plans, employer groups and individuals alike.
