CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has appointed Jack Price to the newly-created position of chief security officer.

In his new role, Price will be responsible for physical and information security as well as business continuity and safety. The position was created to merge these three areas into one operation to ensure best-in-class security practices as well as reduce potential risks to the company, its employees and members. He will also continue to oversee BlueCross’ special investigation unit and will report to Judith Nelson, vice president and chief compliance officer at BlueCross.

Price joined BlueCross in 2002 as a senior legal investigator. A year later, he was overseeing the special investigation unit. In that role, he supervised the investigations of health care fraud and served as a liaison with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Most recently, Price served as the director of enterprise integrity services where he was given additional responsibility for BlueCross’ provider audit and analytics functions.

Price served in the Air Force as an electronics technician for cryptographic communications. After earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga he began a career in law enforcement where he rose from patrol officer to special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Reporting to Price is BlueCross’ new chief information security officer Peter Walker. Walker, who has 25 years of security and law enforcement experience, will work closely with Price to assist the company in its efforts to remain compliant with all government regulations and mandates concerning information and security.

Before coming to BlueCross, Walker served in senior security positions and consulted for organizations such as Microsoft, Charles Schwab and the California Department of Health Care Services. He most recently served as chief information security officer for Blue Shield of California for the past eight years.

Walker graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, with a bachelor’s degree in science. He obtained his master’s degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco and is certified as an Information Systems Security Professional, an Information Security Auditor and an Information Privacy Professional.
