BlueCross Taps Nelson for Vice President of Medicaid Administration
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee recently announced the promotion of Sonya Nelson to vice president of Medicaid administration.
In her new position, Nelson will oversee daily operations of the company’s Medicaid division, which administers benefits for more than 700,000 enrollees in the state’s TennCare program. She will be responsible for contract oversight and will serve as a liaison with the TennCare Bureau. Her oversight will include member and provider service, claims processing, financial/information management and system configuration related to the TennCare program for BlueCross.
Nelson will report directly to Ron Harr, senior vice president of government programs for BlueCross.
Nelson began her career as a senior manager of provider networks at BlueCross in 1997. For the past six years, she has served as the regional director of provider networks and contracting for the company’s Knoxville and Tri-Cities regions.
As regional director, Nelson planned and directed physician, hospital and ancillary contracting for networks supporting all BlueCross products. In addition, she oversaw programs and initiatives that supported marketing and medical management objectives, such as network adequacy, disease management and quality improvement.
Prior to joining BlueCross, Nelson was employed for more than a decade by Humana, Inc. where she served as a workers’ compensation coordinator, provider relations manager and resource-sharing coordinator for military health care services.
Nelson holds a bachelor of science degree from Auburn University and is a member of the Medical Group Management Association (Knoxville chapter).
Nelson and her husband, Herbert, have two children, Cody and Cole.
