BlueCross’ Syler Among Nation’s First Accredited Health Care Fraud Investigators
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association (NHCAA) recently presented Joan Syler, senior investigator at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, with the credential of accredited health care fraud investigator (AHFI).
Syler earned the accreditation by meeting specific qualifications in professional experience, formal education, ongoing training and demonstrated knowledge in the detection and investigation of fraud against private and government-funded health insurance plans.
Established in 2002, the AHFI program provides the first-ever formal accreditation for health care fraud investigators. Individuals accredited under the program must pass a rigorous half-day examination and must also meet stringent continuing professional education requirements to maintain their AHFI status.
“The AHFI program was created in part to reflect the considerable specialized skills, knowledge and experience that the detection and investigation of health insurance fraud demand,” said NHCAA Director of Investigation Support Michael Costello. “Joan Syler epitomizes those qualities at the highest levels, and the NHCAA is very proud to recognize her achievement.”
Syler, a registered nurse, has been employed with BlueCross since 1996. In early 2004, she was honored with the Inspector General’s Integrity Award for her fraud investigation work.
