Some Facts About the Health Care Law

The 2,409 pages of the health care law are no easy read. Perhaps that's why so few people have read the full text. Yet, knowing what it says and what it means to you and your health care choices is no less important.

These key points can help you get a better sense of how the health care law text creates a new era in health care – and what you can expect:

  1. It expands access to insurance in Tennesseeby helping many of the almost 900,000 uninsured residents in our state get access to affordable health insurance. That's almost 2 out of every 10 Tennesseans under age 65.
  2. It created a new way to shop for and buy health insurance as of October 1, 2013, when the Health Insurance Marketplace officially opened.
  3. It may give you a break on health insurance coststhrough parts of the health care law that call for free or low-cost plans and financial assistance, including a tax credit, that can help reduce your monthly costs.
  4. It makes sure that 80 cents of every premium dollar you payis spent on health care costs or improvements to care.
  5. It gives you coverage for preventive care servicesat no additional cost under most health insurance plans, including immunizations and screenings for many common health problems.
  6. It spells out a specific Patient's Bill of Rights, including guaranteed coverage for those with existing health problems (pre-existing conditions) and more.
  7. It provides coverage for young adultsuntil they turn 26 years old by allowing them to stay on their parents’ health insurance policy.
  8. It protects people with health problemsby making sure health plans cover them regardless of pre-existing health conditions.
  9. It provides greater choices and enhanced protections for Americans with disabilitieswith "affordable health insurance and an enhanced commitment to community living."
