How the MMA Impacts Your Employee
and Retiree Health Plans

The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) creates a new prescription drug benefit for 2006 which can be purchased by anyone eligible for Medicare. This new benefit, Medicare Part D, will require employer groups, who offer pharmacy benefits, to evaluate and provide notification to their employees of how their drug plan compares to Medicare Part D benefits. It also provides important opportunities for employers sponsoring retiree prescription drug coverage to receive financial assistance from the federal government.
