Cameron Hill Lights

At times we've been approached about the lights burning at all hours at BlueCross’ Cameron Hill headquarters. Most people express concerns we’re wasting energy and dollars. We’d like to address these concerns:

  • First, and foremost, we are not an 8-5 operation. Employees arrive at our offices as early as 4 a.m. and leave as late as 10 p.m. In fact, some employees are on campus 24 hours a day. Our people are working to pay nearly $63 million in claims daily.
  • After employees leave, cleaning crews sweep through the buildings overnight to prepare them for the next business day.
  • We are required to maintain a minimum amount of lighting 24 hours a day for emergency purposes. Some lights on each floor and in the stairs at the end of each building must remain lit. Having a glass office complex on a hill makes every bulb visible.
  • We turn the lights off as soon as possible each night.
  • Typical Commercial Building – Lighting consumption as a percentage of total consumption = 17%
  • BlueCross’ Cameron Hill Campus – Lighting consumption as a percentage of total consumption = 8.7%

BlueCross is a leader in environmental responsibility. We're proud to say our gold LEED certified campus is on track to save 25-30% per year in utility costs
