Consumer Directed Health Care

consumer directed health care

Engaging employees in health plan costs.

The Consumer-Directed Health Care (CDHC) concept helps teach employees the value of their medical care, empower them with flexibility and choice, and encourage them to make wiser health care decisions.

CDHC is the combination of a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and a financial component, like a Health Savings Account (HSA), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

HDHPs

High deductible health plans offer comprehensive coverage after certain copays, deductibles, coinsurance and other out-of-pocket expenses have been met.

HSA/HRA/FSA

These financial arrangements enable you and/or your employees to set aside pre-tax and tax-deductible dollars for approved health care expenses – such as copays, deductibles, coinsurance and prescriptions.

Here's how CDHC works:

  • Enroll in one of our High Deductible Health Plans.
  • Secure a compatible financial arrangement, such as an HSA (from a financial institution), or an HRA or FSA (from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee).
  • You and/or your employees make pre-tax or tax-deductible contributions these individual “accounts.”
  • Employees use these funds to pay for approved medical expenses, such as deductibles, coinsurance and prescriptions.
  • And, because they are using their “own money,” employees learn the actual cost of care and make wiser health care choices.
