Pests such as cockroaches, ants, rats and mice can be a nuisance year round. Luckily, you can take steps to protect your home and keep it pest free throughout the year.
Follow these steps to pest-proof your home:
- Tightly seal all entry points.
Monitor for cracks, crevices, or gaps in siding, door, and window screens, and around pipes. Replace worn weatherstripping.
- Inspect the roof.
Bats just love to hang out under eaves and find holes in your roof. Close any gaps in your eaves and flash joints with galvanized steel or aluminum. Use expanding foam to fill holes in soffits and fascia.
- Clean your gutters.
If you don't keep your gutters clear, some animals may breed and nest in the debris and moisture that piles up there.
- Inspect firewood.
Store on a raised platform away from your home. Inspect it before bringing it inside.
- Seal the foundation.
Practice pest control by placing river rocks or stones between your home and the ground below, or you may find mice making a home in your foundation.
- Practice good sanitation.
Keep counters and dishes clean. Tightly seal leftovers prior to storing. Empty garbage bins and vacuum frequently to avoid attracting pests.
These pest control tips will give you a good place to start.
