Flu FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do to prevent the flu?

The most important thing to do now is to take care of yourself and practice preventive hygiene.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Stay home if you get sick. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue – or use the bend of your arm –  when you cough or sneeze. Throw tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and hot water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Vaccinate yourself and your family as vaccines become available.
  • Practice other healthy habits such as exercise, stress reduction, and healthy eating.
