Eastgate Hard Drive Theft

Eastgate Hard Drive Theft

Last Updated May 18, 2010

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has completed its audit, remediation and notification process for members affected by the Eastgate hard drive theft.  BlueCross is currently finalizing a mailing to the nearly 1 million identified members reiterating BlueCross’ efforts to ensure each member’s data is secure.  Additionally, the mailing will include information on the discounts available to each member for Equifax and LifeLock credit monitoring and identity protection services.

BlueCross has also begun the process of reporting on affected members to employer groups.  Groups will be receiving a comprehensive list of each affected employee and the tier in which that employee was identified (Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier 3).  In addition, BlueCross will be reporting to brokers on groups with members that were identified.  Because of HIPAA privacy rules, BlueCross can only provide the total number of affected members for each group.  Specific member information (e.g., name, Tier) will not be included.

As of May 14, 2010, the total number of current and former members[i] identified stands at 998,936; with all identified members receiving notifications indicating that their personal information was included on the stolen hard drives.

The 239,103 members in the Tier 3 category – confirmed as having their name, address, BlueCross member ID number, diagnosis, Social Security number and/or date of birth included in the stolen hard drives – have been sent a notification detailing the services available to them through BlueCross.   Of the 312,284 current and former members identified in the Tier 2 category (name, address, BlueCross member ID number, date of birth and/or diagnosis), 146,612 subscribers[ii] have been identified as requiring a notification letter be sent with details of the hard drive theft and remediation services offered to them and their family members through BlueCross.  And, 447,549 current and former members identified in the Tier 1 category – confirmed as having their name, address, BlueCross member ID number and/or date of birth – have received notification letters.

BlueCross has confirmed that 25,753 members have contacted Equifax to initiate the free 3-in-1 credit monitoring service offered to those members in the Tier 3 category.  Another 2,612 members have initiated the LifeLock® services available to minors in the Tier 3 category. And, a total of 998,422 members have been enrolled in the Kroll ID Theft Smart program.  As of May 14, 2010, there has been no documented incident of identity theft or credit fraud of BlueCross members as a result of this incident.

Below is a representation of total members identified and notifications sent through April 29, 2010, including the free remediation services to mitigate the potential for misuse of information.
