Specialty Pharmacy Program

Specialty Pharmacy Program

state of tennesseeBlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has available a Specialty Pharmacy Program for members with chronic health conditions such as hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and hemophilia. Certain injectable and tablet medications are available through three carefully selected vendors who are experts in these types of high-cost medications.

State of Tennessee members have access to the Specialty Pharmacy Program and can choose from three specialty pharmacy vendors who have agreed to offer these specialty drugs at discounted rates. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee implemented the Specialty Pharmacy Program as another way to help control the cost of prescription drugs.

Through the Specialty Pharmacy Program, you get convenient delivery of your specialty medications and related supplies. In addition, you can rely on registered pharmacists and nurse specialists to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your medication. This program does not affect the benefits that apply to treatment of these chronic conditions.

Your doctor will write your prescription and fax it to one of the three specialty pharmacies. The specialty pharmacy will ship the medications directly to your home or to your doctor's office -- whichever is more appropriate. If the medication is to be administered by you, then it will be shipped to your home, along with educational materials. Patient care support will be provided via telephone. If the medication is to be administered by your doctor, then the medication will go to your doctor's office.

Due to the fragile nature of these medications, and to ensure drug quality, all shipments are limited to a 34-day supply of each medication. This limit also helps avoid wasting any of the prescription.

More information on the Specialty Drug Program is available on our Specialty Pharmacy Program Page, or call the member service number listed on the front of your member ID card.
