Across Tennessee, good things are happening. Patient safety is improving. Children who cannot otherwise afford it are getting free vision care. Seniors are thriving. Kids are getting leaner. People are getting healthier. And through the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Community Trust, the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation, corporate giving, and Team Blue volunteers we support the organizations that make all of this possible.
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s total charitable contributions in 2012 equaled more than $10.2 million. Through our Community Trust, Health Foundation and corporate giving, we award grants focused on high-impact initiatives that work with civic and economic partners to promote healthy lifestyles. Need support for an innovative program?
BLUES Project – We are committed to the future of Tennessee’s children. The BLUES Project, a clinic and home-based intervention program in Shelby and Hamilton counties, addresses Tennessee’s ranking as 45 in the United States in infant mortality. Through the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the program offers educational, medical and social support to at-risk mothers and their babies. BlueCross has awarded $6.2 million since its inception in 2005.
Shape the State – Beginning in 2011 our Foundation’s Shape the State grants were awarded to schools throughout Tennessee. Grants are used to purchase a physical education curriculum, training and equipment. With help from the Tennessee Department of Education’s Coordinated School Health, the Shape the State program expanded to include the OrganWise Guys nutrition program, which will impact 150 elementary schools over a period of three years.
TSSAA - We have a long-standing commitment to high school athletic programs. That’s why we are the proud corporate sponsor of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association and have been since 2000, supporting the BlueCross Bowl, BlueCross Basketball Championships, and the BlueCross Championship Series
We promote physical fitness, teamwork and leadership while encouraging young people to live healthy, productive lives, in hopes of providing a brighter, healthier future.
Tennessee Senior Olympics - For more than 30 years, thousands of senior athletes have inspired the rest of Tennessee with their heart and passion for life – on and off the field. And we have been proud to support them – and the Tennessee Senior Olympics – every step of the way.
Each fall, from Johnson City to Jackson, senior athletes from 10 districts across Tennessee compete for a chance at the next level – and the next medal. Every July, 2,000 of the best of these athletes meet in Franklin, Tenn., for the fun and friendly competition of the Tennessee Senior Olympics State Finals.
Healthier TN – The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation is proud to partner with the Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness through a $3 million dollar donation to the Healthier TN initiative. The Healthier TN initiative will focus on getting Tennesseans to move more, eat healthier, and stop smoking – all issues that the Tennessee Health Foundation supports. The Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness encourages Tennessean’s to "Start Now" towards better health.
Tennessee Hospital Association – The Tennessee Hospital Association has been a key partnership for the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation. The THA knows the importance of patient safety and has invested time and resources to bettering the quality of care that patients receive. Through varying projects like transitioning to electronic medical records and implementing campaigns (hand washing, specific surgical practices to better outcomes, etc.) in hospitals across the state, the THA is making our hospitals safer every day for Tennesseans.
If you could string all of the volunteer hours worked last year by BlueCross employees end-to-end, you’d have more than 1,200 days of uninterrupted service. Employees donate their time to community service organizations all across Tennessee. And, last spring, groups of employees volunteered to prepare meals, improve landscaping and to support Day of Change activities at Ronald McDonald House Charities statewide. Our Community Trust supported the employees’ efforts with $50,000 in donations for Tennessee Ronald McDonald Houses – $10,000 for each location.
