More Ways to Save

You know it’s important to find a health plan that fits your needs and your budget, but did you know that there are ways to save on your health care, before you start shopping for a plan and even after you’ve enrolled?

Once you’ve enrolled, use these tips for saving on health care:

  • Use network doctors and hospitals every time
Your provider network is an important part of your health plan. When you use doctors, hospitals, and health care providers in your plan’s network, you save money. Just check your Member ID card and your network directory. Remember, your plan lets you choose any doctor or hospital for your care, but if you choose a healthcare provider who isn't in your network, you'll pay much more.
  • Use your preventive care benefits
Have an annual checkup, talk to your doctor regularly and take the right preventive tests. All new plans cover annual wellness visits and other preventive care expenses at no additional cost, and these simple steps help find symptoms early, before a more serious and costly problem develops. Getting the right preventive care at the right time is an important way to care for yourself and your family's health while keeping your costs down.
  • Avoid the ER except for true emergencies
When you use the ER for everyday care, everyone pays more – higher rates, higher copays and definitely higher out-of-pocket costs. Use the ER when you have an emergency, but see your doctor when you need routine care and consider an in-network urgent care center for other non-emergency treatment.
  • Ask questions before you receive treatment
It never hurts to ask questions, especially when it comes to your medical expenses. Before you receive treatment, ask your doctor questions like how much a recommended treatment or prescription drug will cost, or if it’s the most cost-effective solution. If you’re unsure that a recommended procedure is needed, remember that you can go to another doctor and ask for his or her opinion. It could save you money and time in the long run.
