Coopwood Appointed to BlueCross Board of Directors
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has appointed Reginald Coopwood, M.D., as the newest member of its board of directors.|
As president and CEO of Regional Medical Center at Memphis, Coopwood brings more than 20 years of health care industry experience and knowledge of the provider perspective to his new position.
“Dr. Coopwood’s health care industry experience and passion for service are attributes that will benefit BlueCross and its members,” said Vicky Gregg, CEO of BlueCross. “With his discipline and decisiveness, I can think of no one better suited at this time to help guide our company’s efforts to transform the health plan model and provide continued peace of mind for our fellow Tennesseans.”
Prior to his current position, Coopwood served as CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority. There he directed the health care system’s financial turnaround by reducing funding requirements and improving performance in the services provided. He also utilized keen analysis, insight and a team approach in restructuring and driving organizational improvements.
Coopwood was also chief medical officer and chief of surgery of Nashville General Hospital at Meharry as well as the founder and senior partner of Signature Surgical Group, a medical practice with three surgeons covering four hospitals with more than $800,000 in revenues in just over ten years.
He attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala., where he earned a Bachelor of General Studies in biology, chemistry and business administration. He earned his medical degree from and performed his residency at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, where he was also an associate professor until 2010.
Coopwood is a current member of the Memphis Division of the March of Dimes and the Memphis Rotary Club. He is also a member of the American College of Physician Executives and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has received several awards, including the Dr. Archie Powell Excellence in Health Award and Tennessee Business Magazine’s Healthcare Top 25 in 2007 and 2009.
