Understanding Health Insurance Costs

A Look at the Costs and How to Manage Them

Since the health care law impacts everyone, it's not only important to know what to expect in terms of the choices and coverage, it's also good to know about health insurance costs and how the law affects your wallet.

There's good news for those who don’t have health insurance today because they say they can’t afford it – or they struggle to pay for it.

Since January 1, 2014, there are three different kinds of help with health insurance costs available. Each type of help depends on your income and family size:

  • Lower costs on monthly premiums via an Advance Premium Tax Credit.
  • Lower out-of-pocket costs for copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles via requirements in the health care law, depending on your income and family size.
  • Low-cost coverage through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
