Types of Behavioral Health Providers

The following outlines the types of behavioral health providers included in our networks and their requirements. (Must be licensed for independent practice in the state of Tennessee).

Clinical Nurse Specialist (RN/CNS)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Psychiatric or Community Mental Health Nursing and certification or proven competence as a Psychiatric nurse. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Registered Nurse.

*Clinical Nurse Specialist/Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Psychiatric or Community Mental Health Nursing, certification as a Psychiatric nurse and designation as Advance Practice Psychiatric Nurse. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Registered Nurse.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Clinical Social Work. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Counseling or other state License Board approved degree. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Licensed Psychological Examiner (LPE)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Psychology. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Licensed Psychological Examiner.

Licensed Senior Psychological Examiner (LSPE)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Psychology. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Licensed Senior Psychological Examiner with a “Health Services Practitioner” (HSP) designation.

Psychiatrist (MD, DO)
Requires: MD, DO. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Physician and Board Certification (or Eligibility) as a Psychiatrist.

Psychologist (Ph.D, Psy.D, ED.D)
Requires: Doctoral degree with appropriate coursework/training/internship. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Psychologist with a “Health Services Practitioner” (HSP) designation.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Requires: Masters or Doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or Masters or Doctoral degree in Related Counseling field as long as specified coursework is completed. Must be licensed in the state of Tennessee as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

*APNs fall under the RN/CNS category but require additional training and qualifications. APNs are allowed prescriptive authority under supervision of psychiatric physician.
