Learn more about The Tennessee Plan

The Tennessee Plan is a supplemental medical insurance program for State of Tennessee Group Insurance Program retirees with Original Medicare. The Tennessee Plan helps cover certain expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t fully pay for and gives you the freedom to get care from any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.

Eligibility

See if you qualify

The Tennessee Plan is available to retired state government and higher education employees, as well as retired local education and local government employees and their eligible spouses and children enrolled in Medicare.

The Tennessee Plan does not coordinate with or pay benefits for members enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

We’ve included the eligibility requirements* for retirees and their spouses and children below.

Eligibility Requirements

Retiree
Retirees hired before July 1, 2015, may be eligible if they're covered by Original Medicare and meet one of the following requirements:
Retired state employee, including state higher education, who is drawing retirement benefits through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System
Retired state higher education employee who participates in a state higher education optional retirement plan
Retired local education employee who is drawing a monthly retirement allowance from TCRS
Retired county judge, county official or employee of an employer participating in TCRS who is drawing a monthly retirement allowance from TCRS
Retiree's Spouse
Retiree's Children
A covered retiree’s child may be eligible if the child is enrolled in Medicare Part A, is under age 26 and meets at least one of the following criteria:
The child is the retiree’s natural or adopted child, regardless of where the child lives.
The child is the retiree’s stepchild, and the retiree or the retiree’s spouse has legal custody, joint custody or shared parenting responsibility.
The child is under the retiree’s legal guardianship.
The plan has received a qualified medical child support order requiring the child’s enrollment in a health insurance plan, and the child is eligible for Medicare Part A.
The child is required to be covered under applicable state or federal law.
