Primary Coverage Reminder: Group vs. Medicare
Our staff receives questions from across the state on a daily basis, and one common question is: “Who is responsible for primary coverage on an employed group member who also has Medicare Parts A and B?” The answer depends on the size of the group.
If a Medicare beneficiary (who has both Medicare Parts A and B) is actively employed and is also enrolled in a group plan, the beneficiary’s group coverage remains as the primary coverage if the group consists of 20 members or more. Medicare is considered secondary coverage.
If a group has less than 20 members, Medicare will be the beneficiary’s primary coverage and group coverage will be considered secondary.
