Case Study Compares Health Care Utilization of Members with BlueCross PPOs and HDHPs

BlueCross recently completed a study that tracked member utilization of health care services during a 2005-09 timeframe. The study tracked numbers for the same members and compared members who switched to an HDHP with members who remained in a PPO.

The goal for the study was to determine if members in the HDHP showed the expected higher use of preventive services and generic drugs and compliance with chronic disease management, as well as fewer visits to emergency rooms and lower use of inpatient and outpatient services.

The comparative case study of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s HDHPs and PPOs gives you a look at the results and key findings – confirming that moving from a traditional PPO to an HDHP plan can prompt members to respond with more thoughtful use of health care services. These changes lead to savings for groups and their employees.
