Important News About CoverTN Health Care Coverage for Brokers

The new federal health care law will bring many changes in 2014, including new health insurance coverage options for Tennesseans.

There will be no changes to your clients' CoverTN coverage through December 31, 2013. However, CoverTN coverage will not be available starting January 1, 2014.

In order for us to close out the program:

  • Your employer/clients can no longer add new hires to the plan.
  • CoverTN members can no longer add a spouse to coverage.
  • Applications or change requests sent to CoverTN cannot be processed.

Why is CoverTN ending?

CoverTN is a limited benefit plan. It has annual benefit limits and does not cover all types of the services required by the new health care laws. Therefore, the program cannot continue in 2014.

How can you help your clients through this transition?

  • Contact your clients who provide CoverTN coverage to their employees. Make sure your employer/clients are aware that the program is ending on December 31, 2013. We are contacting CoverTN employers and subscribers, as well, but we want communication to reach everyone.
  • It is particularly important for subscribers to understand that maternity coverage CoverTN members receive through CoverKids/HealthyTNBabies will continue through 60 days after the end of a member's pregnancy for members enrolled in CoverKids/HealthyTNBabies prior to December 31, 2013. But beginning January 1, 2014, all other medical coverage will end.
  • You may want to talk to your clients about continuing to offer coverage to their employees as a small group.
  • You may also want to ask if there are services you can provide to their employees about individual coverage and shopping on the Health Insurance Marketplace offered by the federal government.
